First, Thanks for listening to WRR's coverage of the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. here's the text of our first live report form Bass Hall, 12:32pm on Friday 5/20/05

Thank you Gabrielle,

It is Opening day of the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Open to pianists from age 18 to 30...from anywhere in the world. The 35 contestants start their 17-day odyssey at Fort Worth's Bass Performance Hall at 1 p.m. today, each has to be ready to play upwards of five hours of music, the vast majority of it without a written score in front of them, whilst being judged by some very prestigious names in the music business. The Cliburn judges will have to listen to everything – more than 60 hours of music from the 35 competitors

The 35 aspiring professionals vie for prizes, management and recording contracts. All whilst the world is listening. Talk about pressure!

All of the contestants have already been vigourously vetted through the audition process. Some 270 pianists worldwide applied this year; 147 of them were picked to audition. The 35-competitor field is an increase from the usual 30 players.

Even though the competition does not begin till 1 this afternoon, things got underway with a 90 minute Seminar at 10:00 “A personal perspective on competitions, career, and the arts”
Stanislav Ioudenitch, Gold Medalist, Eleventh Competition
